Sports Gold App Merge

Prior to starting my journey at NBC Sports, there was a standalone app for NBC Sports Gold—a subscription over-the-top service to provide access to additional content. My first design challenge was to create a seamless experience that would merge the gold content into the NBC Sports app. This would result in having a single location to watch thousands of live sporting events. The app is available on iOS, Android, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku and gaming consoles. We had to tailor a solution to meet the needs of each platform and our users.

APP FILTERS + ACCESS KEYS
NBC Sports Gold was added to a list of existing channels. This was an iteration on the previous version, and how we begin to organize content.
There was a filter set designed for each channel that creates a funnel to find specific content. The filter option is only available in the Live & Upcoming, Replays, and Highlights tab.
Merging the Sports Gold content was the goal here, so we had to distinguish between the assets with a lock and unlocked key. Access to a particular sport is gained by purchasing a gold pass online.
We also had to consider the use cases of other platforms, and how this solution would translate.
Roku and Fire TV used the exposed horizontal filter set for easy access.
Apple TV used an expandable vertical filter set with their touch remote’s navigation experience in mind.
Xbox and PS4 presented an opportunity to use the controller buttons as helpful labels in the interface.
IN-APP PURCHASES
There was also a business opportunity to add in-app purchases for the NBC Sports connected and mobile experiences. We used the App Store and Google Play Store guidelines for subscriptions and combined that with our own Piano user entitlement system—to sign in or create an account.
